My Uncle Percy, Constable P. T. Stevens was the instigator of Camp McKay, Kurrajong. When I was at boarding school in Windsor, aroung 1941 or 1942.

I used to go to Camp McKay in 1965 onwards from Balmain police boys club...took forever to get there on the old rattling bus..I was under the 10 y.o. age minimum..mustve been an arse of a kid for my parents and the coppers to get me out there.
Had a ball every time I went there too.

My 10 year old son is going on his first school camp tomorrow and it has brought back great memories for me. I looked forward to camp Mckay every fortnight I think it was by memory. I was a member of the Paddington PCYC in the late 70s where I did boxing amongst other things.

I remember myself and a couple of schoolmates from Bondi Public School enjoying activities like archery, pool, piggery, flying fox, movies etc. I think in that era it was off duty police that would look over us and make sure we didn't get up to mischief as it got quite boisterous in the cabins at night. So many great childhood memories were made by camp Mckay so thank you to all the police that gave their time.

Is camp McKay still operating today?

Unfortunately Camp McKay is no longer operating, it was sold in the 1980s.

I am sad if Camp MacKay has closed. I also had fond memories of Camp MacKay but was also a bit scary as everybody was wild, a bit like Lord of the Flies scenario. I also learned how to swear at Camp MacKay. Good memories!
