Hawkesbury People & Places The Petterson family owned a 100 acre estate fronting Crooked Lane at the junction with Kurmond Road, North Richmond. This was a grant of land to Richard Rouse in 1802 and was later sold to the Christenson’s who bequeathed it to daughter Olivia Cecelia Petterson (nee Christenson). The house was built by Alfred Eric Petterson, a building contractor, from timber on their property, made their own red bricks, walls were Flemish bond brickwork, slate roof and the cast iron ornamental panels and floor tiles on the verandah were imported from Italy. It was called “Cecil Lodge” and provided accommodation for visitors from Sydney. Cecil Lodge was constructed on land described as Portion 114, Parish of Currency, County of Cook amounting to 250 acres which was granted to Richard Rouse in 1802. After the death of Richard, it became part of the estates of George Moore Rouse. Then in November 1891, it was sold from Rouse to Johannes Christensen, a brickmaker by trade who had established a brickworks at South Windsor in the early 1890s. He sometimes fired the bricks on the same block of land as a building was being constructed. The Wesleyan Church at North Richmond was built of bricks made by Christensen on site. It is therefore likely that the bricks for Cecil Lodge may have also been made on the property. Johannes Christenson passed away in 1910 and in 1918 ownership of Cecil Lodge passed to his daughter Olivia Cecilia Pettersen. Orchards were established on the property with 40 acres under cultivation in 1905. In the early 1940s subdivision of the land took place and Cecil Lodge became allotment 22 of the subdivision. After the death of Olivia Cecilia in 1935, the property was advertised for sale. Several years later on the 31 August 1943, the property was sold to Isidore Claire Robertson for £1,050. In 1959, it then passed from Robertson to Pieter Gerrit Wisse and his wife Margaret Mabel Wisse for £4,500. Alfred Eric Petterson who was born in Sweden in 1854 and passed away at Cecil Lodge on the 29 July 1923 aged 69 years and was buried in St Peter’s Cemetery, Richmond. Olivia Cecelia Petterson (nee Christensen) was also born in Sweden in 1858 and passed away at Cecil Lodge on the 3 January 1935 aged. She was buried with her husband in St Peter’s Cemetery, Richmond.
