The locality of Portland Head was first settled by free immigrants, most of whom arrived per the ‘Coromandel’ on 13 June 1802. Initially they settled on the government farm at Toongabbie before they were each granted 100 acres in 1803 at Portland head on either bank of the Hawkesbury River.

There are several newspaper reports of the fire which destroyed Henry Lamb’s property at Lower Portland which occurred in May 1805. The follwing were published in the Sydney Gazette and NSW Advertiser in June and July of that year.
