The locality known as Sally’s Bottom was in the vicinity of Tennyson and also taking in the area around Currency Creek, now known as Glossodia. In June 1823, the Governor of NSW Thomas Brisbane granted Thomas Vardy Portion 32 in the Parish of Currency County of Cook comprising 60 acres of land and bordering on the grants of Owen Martin and Edward Murrony.
The first mention of the name Sally’s Bottom in the newspapers was the report of the deaths of in the Sydney Gazette and NSW Advertiser of the 21 March 1829:
An Inquest was held at the general hospital, Windsor, on Saturday, the 14th instant, and by adjournment to the “Red Lion Inn,” and finally concluded on Monday, the 16th instant, on the bodies of Joseph Copson, a prisoner, per Neptune, and also Charles Paul, a prisoner per Prince Regent, whose verdict was,
“That Joseph Copson, on Thursday, the 12th day of March instant at a creek, called “Sally Bottom Creek,” district of Curry Jong, County of Northumberland, was fired at by Thomas Carpenter with a musket, loaded with powder, slugs, and ball, part of which wounded the said John Copson, by passing through the head and brain, and also on other parts of the body, so that the said Joseph Copson instantly died;
“That the said Charles Paul, on Thursday, the 12th day of March instant, at Perkins’ farm, District of Curry Jong, County of Northumberland, was fired at by Thomas Carpenter with a musket, loaded with powder and ball, which had wounded the head and brain of the said Charles Paul, whereof he instantly died; — by each of which acts, the said Thomas Carpenter is Guilty of Wilful Murder.
The name of Sally’s Bottom has been changed by the Department of Education, the more poetic title of Tennyson having been substituted.
